To Seek the Stars
Nick (Shae Vanderin): Should we wait for doug or start now?
I’m good either way, Doug’s heating food.
Okay, gonna hold a few minutes for Doug – do we have any more questions, clarifications, or et cetera?
Since socialization outside D&D sessions has pretty much dried up.
Raegar: Just one
Raegar: What are a ranger an elf and a dwarf doing in the Ridermark?
GM: the answer is… THE QUEEN’S OWN 42ND HIGHLANDERS
Nick (Shae Vanderin): wb doug
Raegar: we were heading to the lumbermill
Shae Vanderin turns back to the field commander in the temple about to say something, then pauses and turns to follow Raegar.
Shae Vanderin: “Raegar I understand our concern with tracking the undead who marched south to Ashby in order to find out where they are comming from and why…”
Shae Vanderin: “But in my opinion, I dont feel we should be required to do anything beyond that. As in locating the people of Rurik and endangering ourselves in the process.”
Raegar: “Frankly, I want to see if the lumberyard is in good order. If its salvageable.”
Raegar: “If it is…”
Shae Vanderin: “Are you going to buy this town as well?”
Shae Vanderin looks at Raegar wryly.
Ryasi: “I think he mostly wants to buy the lumbermill for its equipment..”
Raegar: “When did I buy a town?”
Raegar: “Sure.. If by buy you mean.. Loot.”
Shae Vanderin: “Ashby?
”color:#000054;">Shae Vanderin: “Ah.. hmm.”
technically he didn’t buy Ashby… but he might as well have.
the result was the same.
Shae Vanderin: “Why dont we instead, ‘borrow’ any equipment we find that could be useful to us. That way if the original owners return we can give it back to them without resorting to theivery.”
Ryasi: “I’m not sure I see the difference.”
Shae Vanderin: “If the original owners return we can return the equipment or some form of compensation.”
Raegar: “Hang around Shae, you’ll find she has the oddest morals. But a rock-hard sense of private property and a stringent definition of ownership..”
Raegar: "I myself am more the “Finders-Keepers” kind of moralist.“
”color:#000054;">Raegar: “Now, lets go see what can be looted from the poor dead schmucks.”
Raegar: “..I mean.. Uhh.. Poor victims..”
You exit out the north side of town, headed for the mill!
Raegar: “Of this.. horrible tragedy..”
The first thing you notice, really, is that the graveyard has been… well..
Where once Rurik boasted a small but tidy cemetary, the whole cemetary is now little more than a crudely dug out crater.
Tombstones lay strewn all about.
Shae Vanderin: Does it look like they were dug up or as if whatever was buried burst from the earth?
Ilphvrae: “I sure hope the guards did all this digging…”
To you, it looks as though some giant reached down with his titanic hand, scooped up the earth and cast it aside.
Shae Vanderin: Any coffins at the bottom?
some shards o’ wood here and there, but nothing to amount to much.
Shae Vanderin: Any scent of decay?
Shae Vanderin: Or that odd herb smell?
Oh, aye, but nothing to the extent of the rot beasties from before.
More like normal exhumed old graves stench.
As for the herbs.. roll .. … … wisdom?
Shae Vanderin shrugs.
ditto everyone else if they care.
Shae Vanderin: Wisdom check [1d20+1 = 19]
Raegar: Wisdom check [1d20+1 = 5]
Raegar: thats racist dude
You don’t smell anything but exhumed dead crap.
Ilphvrae: Wisdom check [1d20+3 = 16]
Ilph and Shae both pick up the herbs, though
Shae Vanderin: “Do you smell that Ilph? Its those Mishiran herbs for preserving the dead.”
To be fair.. its a mishrian cemetary.
Raegar: MY POINT EXACTLY
Raegar: “Gee.. Odd that.. those would be found in.. a CEMETARY.”
Ryasi: “No bodies, though. Which begs the question – where did they go from here?”
Shae Vanderin: “Its an odd tradition is all.”
Raegar: “It’d be odder if it didnt smell of those herbs. Why didnt the mishrians do the sensible thing and burn their dead…”
Raegar: “The undead.. Annoy me.”
Shae Vanderin: “From what Ive heard they granted equal citizenship status to sentient undead as well as common folk.”
Raegar: “They did? Odd people..”
You talk as you walk!
Shae Vanderin: “Not sure if its true, just what the rumor was back home.”
Raegar starts to pentomime a discussion between Mishrians.
Raegar: " “oh hello mr. Fjorn, how are you this day?” “
Raegar: " “Really? Then what happened?” “
”color:#540000;“>Ilphvrae glares at Raegar
”color:#000054;">Raegar: " "GraaaarrrR""
Raegar: " “And that wasn’t his camel?” “
”color:#000054;">Ilphvrae: “Don’t quit your day job.”
Shae Vanderin chuckles a bit at Ilph.
Raegar: “That bit would’ve killed with a Mirshrian audience.”
Raegar: “Kill.. Heh.”
Ilphvrae: “Yes they would have killed you, you are right.”
Shae Vanderin: “Alright, lets get down to business and see what we can salvage.”
Raegar: “You people are altogether too serious.”
Raegar: “Its just walking corpses after-all.”
Ilphvrae: “Less talk about the specifics of peoples and their burial practices and more looking for what happned to the people of this town…”
Raegar: “You know, didn’t we hear rumors last week of undead in the south?”
It was more than a week ago at this point.. you spend a lot of time travelling.
Raegar: I have a hard time figuring out time in this game cuz of the travel
Doug (Ilphvrae): How big is this mill?
Shae Vanderin: “Yes, what of it? It was those dwarves telling us of the battle they were returning from.”
Raegar: “Ahhhh thats what it was..”
Raegar: “Well, if anything, the infestation could be coming from there.”
Not too big, Doug.. it was a small town – and not all that old, either.
Raegar: “And I just thought of something… Didn’t that dragon fly south?”
Raegar: “…And the Drow said he was from the south as well.”
Shae Vanderin: “Yes.”
Raegar: “Looks to me as if theres work for your type down there Shae.”
Raegar: “Hired hands of the sword-wieldy variety.”
Ilphvrae: “I am wondering if they built this mill on a old crypt or something.”
Shae Vanderin: “Agreed. As soon as we get some recruits I was going to suggest an expedition south to find work.”
Raegar: “Or maybe a ative graveyard..”
You arrive at the mill grounds!
Shae Vanderin: Does it look fairly quiet?
Shae Vanderin: No sign of activity from anything?
The few graves that had been dug at the mill have also been exhumed.
Shae Vanderin: “Looks like we are the first ones here. Lets spread out and find some salvageables, Ill take inventory.”
Shae Vanderin pulls out a parchment and quill pen.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Is the mill a mostly enclosed building or more like a roof covering an area with just a couple of walls to block wind and stuff?
Its mostly open, yeah.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Dirt floor or wooden?
You also notice something, the first time you open a door or touch a wall.
The wood crumbles away in your hands, rotten to the core.
Nick (Shae Vanderin): I think there other small buildings here as well. Like the barracks and what not.
Raegar: “Interesting. This is new wood yet.. Its entirely rotten.”
Indeed, after touching a door, it virtually melts away from its iron fittings.
Shae Vanderin: “Look at this rot… has everything been affected?”
the handle clatters to – and through
Shae Vanderin: “Be careful the buildings might not be stable.”
Doug (Ilphvrae): like it has been deprived of moisture or more like bugs ate it rotten?
Doug (Ilphvrae): and it is only affecting the wood, not the metal?
Metal seems perfectly intact..
The walls.. the doors… tool handles..
Doug (Ilphvrae): Share and Raegar since the touched the wood… :P
Water in supply barrels has turned rancid.
Food in crates and sacks has gone bad.
You have a great many tools – but they’ll all need new handles.
Doug (Ilphvrae): So the barrels were not wood or the water and food kept them from rotting?
…barrels were included in the list of “anything organic”
Shae Vanderin: “At least we can put these to use or get a few silver for them.”
Raegar: “This is rather odd.”
Shae Vanderin: “Some kind of blight.”
Raegar: “Some pestilence..”
to be fair, the whole place is starting to smell.
Shae Vanderin: Going to search each of the structures carefully for any valueables or salvageable items. Let me know if we find anything besides tool parts.
Raegar: I spend my time settign fire to the main building.
Raegar: Thats a joke.
GM: [2d100 = 46]
You don’t need to.
Raegar: It falls downe?
The building that was first checked – and provided the example of the door melting off its hinges?
The whole thing begins to collapse in on itself.
Some of it stays semi-solid… parts of it turn into a liquid sludge.
Ilphvrae quickly moves back out of the dust from the falling building
by the time it has finished collapsing, the building is a pool of filth.
Ilph, gonna need a fort save!
Ilphvrae: Fortitude save [1d20+4 = 18]
Ilph, the smell is bad enough that its all you can do to keep the contents of your stomach where they are.
Ilphvrae: “OK, lets leave. This is nastie.”
Shae Vanderin: “Never seen a building melt before.”
Ilphvrae: “I don’t cougs care. Take a mental picture and coughs lets go.”
Ryasi: “And I thought the horrors of my homeland were terrible.. this land of yours is truly inspiring.”
The ‘pool’ of rot is beginning to emit a visible cloud of vapors.
Ilphvrae: “lets go and repor this.”
Several of the other buildings you’ve been tampering with are showing signs of imminent collapse as well.
Shae Vanderin: “Aye.”
Shae Vanderin: “Lets go Raegar. Nothing for us here unless you want to poke around for tracks.”
Ilphvrae mounts up and get some distance
Another building collapses into soup.
The cloud is getting larger.
Ryasi returns to her mount and follows Ilph, pausing a short distance away.
Ilphvrae coves her nose and mouht with a scarf
Raegar: “Well… Thats that.”
Raegar: “Im not bringing any of this stuff back to Ashby.”
Shae Vanderin: “Powerful death magic to create such a blight.”
Shae Vanderin: “And you are probably right.”
The cloud reaches a tree on the periphery of the mill – and you can see it die before your eyes.
Its getting pretty large – and pretty close.
Shae Vanderin drops the bag of tool parts on the ground.
Another building sags and collapses.
Ilphvrae starts to slowly back up her horse down the road
Raegar hops on his horse.
Raegar starts on down the road.
Shae Vanderin mounts up, “Lets head back. This was another fruitless endeavor.”
Shae Vanderin rides.
Ilphvrae: “Umm.. hey you two… hows about you, GET on yer damn horse and move out of the way of the cloud”
You return to Rurik
Several buildings are merrily blazing.
Ilphvrae: “Hardly fruitless, Shae. You have not yet turned to a pile of sludge and were alive to report this disaster to the officer in charge. They need a mage or a cleric out here asap to counter this plague.”
Shae Vanderin: “I suppose.”
Raegar: “Or a chaingang with a bucket and a prayer…”
Ilphvrae: “You seen what happened to that tree. You don’t think that is just gonna stop moving now that it has lost its watchers do you?”
Raegar: “Course not”
Raegar: head to the spot where we met the cap’ain
You return to the temple.
Ilphvrae: All that organci life is going to feed it and it is going tog et biger. They are going to have to burn a large part of the forrest to keep this from spreading.“
”color:#000054;">The captain looks up from the map table, “That was a short trip… why does that not reassure me?”
Raegar: “Theres a rather large cloud of nasty stuff out there.”
Raegar: “It seems to like eating organic material.”
Raegar: “Ahhh and its .. Growing.”
Ilphvrae: “The buildings colapsed and became a laege pond of sludge that is emmiting a cloud of gas that is eating organic matter.”
Ilphvrae: “It also has that really nice smell along with it. You know the one that smells worse then the insides of a Tanari with a bad case of the shits.”
The captain looks at you somewhat blankly.
Meaning Ilph, in this case.
Ilphvrae sighs “No one reads the epic adventure novals anymore.”
Ilphvrae: “Ok, whats the worse thing you have ever smelled, Captain? Think of that smell and times it by 1000 and then give oily taste in your mouth to go along with it.”
Without another word, he makes a gesture to one of his men to the side and leaves the temple – the man he gestured to begins kicking others out of bedrolls and shoving them towards the door.
Raegar: “…What is it?”
Raegar: …i just dawned on me
Raegar: why the hell didnt we just use the horn
Ryasi: “Considering what you just described… the fact that he didn’t even doubt your story or ask any questions rather alarms me.”
Ilphvrae: “Well it does ot make me feel all warm in side either.”
Shae Vanderin: “Which means they have probably seen or heard of this kind of thing before.”
Ilphvrae: “Yes from the war we just fought.”
Shae Vanderin: “Makes sense. Ah well we should head back now since our supplies are running low and all.”
Raegar: “Or help the captain with is problem.. then head back.”
Ilphvrae: “Not sure we can reall be of any use, Raegar. I figure they are buring trees down.”
Raegar: “Very well then.”
Ilphvrae: “They have to contain the spread.”
Raegar: “So, back to Ashby then?”
Shae Vanderin: “I think that would be best.”
Ilphvrae: “We should talk to Las when we get back. She is a mage and maybe is familier with this or something similar”
Raegar: “Oh of course. Im sure she has plenty of experience in the area.”
By the time you leave the temple, the village is in an uproar; troops from all over the area are galloping north towards the mill.
You, meanwhile, turn and make for Ashby.
Cross country or following the road?
Raegar: Can we follow the crosscountry?
Raegar: I dont know..
Two and a half days later you arrive in Ashby
Shae Vanderin: Stable the horses.
Ilphvrae: “So any reason you took us the long way, Raegar? Also was it really needed to back track 6 times?”
Noble Hoxton and a party of volunteers have been hard at work, and construction of earthworks has proceeded quite well.
Ashby has begun to become defensible!
Ilphvrae goes off looking for Las
Shae Vanderin: Ask if any potential recruits have shown up inquiring about the mercenary company. And then I want to do a land survey trying to pinpoint the center of the protective circle around Ashby.
Do you have any particular skill in the realms of geometry, surveying or engineering?
Ilph and Raegar both run into Las at about the same time.
Shae Vanderin: I have knowledge geography if that helps.
Raegar: “We have some questions Lasariel.”
Unfortunately, in this case what would help would be profession (mathematician), (engineer) or (surveyor).
Ilphvrae: “Las! Hello! Jusy who I was looking for!”
Raegar: “Any idea what the bleeding hells causes buildings to melt?”
Raegar: “Smells horrible too.. Gasey..”
Raegar: “Likely to be undead.”
The best most people would be able to come up with, imo, would be “ashby” – for a more specific answer you’d need a specialist.
Ilphvrae: “It seems to kill all organic stuff. I seen a tree die when the gas cloud touched it.”
Lasariel: “So.. it may be related to those rot-ish undead, would you say?”
Raegar: “Smelled about right.”
Ilphvrae: “Or whatever created them.”
Raegar: “My best guess as well, oddly enought, none of them in sight this time around.”
Lasariel: “But you may be looking at the long term results of their passing.”
Ilphvrae: “So that may have been the result of the ones that we killed from before?”
Raegar: “Im still unclear about what these things are exactly.”
Raegar: “We are rather far from the usual skeletal creeps..”
sorry, the DM decided food was important.
Lasariel: “To be fair, Mishria isn’t really ‘about’ the usual skeletal creeps… they go to all this trouble to preserve their dead to have more stable undead, for one..”
Lasariel: “Skeletons are the mark of a talentless hack, in my opinion.”
Raegar: “Uh hu, I see.”
Raegar: “Well, as long as they dont wander through Ashby..”
Lasariel: “No sign of that so far, at least.”
Raegar: “Speaking of which, your handywork?”
Lasariel: “You noticed? You noticed! I mean, its not that I need recognition, but its always so gratifying when people notice.”
Raegar: “I figured as much.”
Ilphvrae: “Very nice spell Las! So it will keep them from intruding on the town?”
Raegar: “Mmm hmm. It’ll be a great help I suspect.”
Lasariel: “Should. I don’t like to deal in absolutes.”
Raegar: “In any case, let me know if you should need anything.. Exotic. I will do my possible to provide it.”
Lasariel: “Oh, I’m sure one of these days I will. I haven’t really been doing much, though.. have you ever tried re-writing a spellbook from memory? Its a daunting task. I’m hoping to get out of this village one of these days, though, but I’ve been so busy when you’ve gone anywhere..”
Ilphvrae: “I am sure we will be going elsewhere at some point in the near future, Las. You are going to come along with us, yeah?”
Ilphvrae: “I keep hearing south this, south that. I just hope they mean to keep us on this landmas, I don’t need to go visit any dragons across the sea.”
Lasariel: “Oh, you must want to go past this landmass.. I mean, its such a small continent, really.”
Ilphvrae: “not that I have anyting aginst Dragons mind you, I am sure they are just busy and we would be in the way and stuff.”
Moving aside from this for a moment..
You do indeed find out that there are a number of people in Ashby responding to your recruitment posters.
Shae Vanderin: I will meet with them one at a time, ask them of their skill set and their reason for joining.
Shae Vanderin: How many are there exactly?
sorry, second plate, I’m done.
Lasariel: [6d10 = 14]
Shae Vanderin: “Greetings, and thank you for comming. I am Shae Vanderin. I have come to this land in order to work with and lead a group of recruits for the purpose of profiteering within the boundaries of the law of the land.”
Shae Vanderin: “All of you who have come today are likely diverse in your set of skills that you can lend to such an organization.”
Shae Vanderin: “Know that while Ashby is our current base of operations, we will plan to move in the future so if any of you are shy to travel know this up front.”
Shae Vanderin: “Once formed, we will be seeking jobs from both private and governmental clients who may have more on their plate to deal with than manpower. That is where we will come in.”
Shae Vanderin: “The risk for some of the jobs we take will be carefully selected and judged based on their probability of success, our skill in the area of demand, and the profit promised.”
Shae Vanderin: “It is my goal to garner an income that will both cause our organization to grow as well as line our pockets with gold.”
Shae Vanderin: “I will now meet with you all, for both a demonstration of your skill, as well as your resolve and character to determine not only that you are competant, but also a team player.”
Shae Vanderin: “This organization does not want individual lone wolf types that jeaprodize the missions of the company by what they deem to be superiority in decision.”
Shae, the men facing you are a quiet, orderly bunch.
All of them are well equipped and rather grim looking.
Shae Vanderin: “For now sit and enjoy Ashby and if you are thirsty take some water. I will meet with you all momentarily. Excuse me.”
Most of them wear the remnants of uniform, some matching, but all very similar to one another.
Nick (Shae Vanderin): ok sorry just hyper about this kind of thing.
Shae Vanderin: I will go try to find Ilph and Raegar.
Raegar is nearby, watching with William. Ilph is.. possibly nearby watching, up to Doug.
Raegar: Raegar has been watching Shae
Raegar: and the new recruits
Shae Vanderin: Approach Raegar.
Shae Vanderin: And say quietly, “Are you sure you do not want a stake in this company as far as leadership is concerned?”
Raegar: “Oh, I will take any stake you wish to give me. Unofficially.”
Ilphvrae meanders over
Raegar: “I find the contract the government enforces for mercenary companies troublesome.”
Shae Vanderin: “Even if I were to do so, a position of command within the company would likely make you culpable for any wrongdoings.”
Shae Vanderin: “Unofficial or not.”
Shae Vanderin: “It at best would be a partial share of responsibility.”
Raegar: “I accept then.”
Shae Vanderin smiles somewhat surprised.
Shae Vanderin: “Great!”
Shae Vanderin: “Ilphvrae, what of you? Will you help as well and share in responsibility for what may come of this?”
Raegar stands up and walks out in front of the men.
I believe Ilph intended to sign it, but Doug’s internet had crashed before he could.
So if you allowed it, Ilph was a co-signatory.
Raegar looks over the uniforms..
Shae Vanderin: I would have, yes.
Ilphvrae: “As long as you follow the law of this land I am willing tobe part of this. You take a contract aginst the goverment and I am out.”
Raegar, there is some degree of distrust and wariness among the fourteen men before you, once you approach.
Shae Vanderin: “That would never be my intent. And if it were I would myself leave. I am not a law breaker.”
Raegar: “Greetings you lot.”
Ilphvrae: “Then yes is my answer.”
Raegar: “I am Raegar, founder of Ashby.”
Shae Vanderin pats Ilph on ths shoulder in thanks and then moves to stand next to Raegar, listening to him speak.
Ilphvrae moves up to stand near the other two
Raegar: “So, I see from your clothing, most of you have experience fighting.”
Raegar: “Regardless of who you were fighting, you are welcome to Ashby.”
Raegar: “… Now, Questions?”
Merc: “Whats the pay? What sort of action can we expect?”
Merc: “I only see fourteen of us here – is this all you got?”
Merc: “There’re more coming, right?”
^ not all the same one ^
Raegar: “All yours Shae.”
Shae Vanderin: “In regards to our numbers, it is true that we are newly formed. But that does not indicate in any way our lack of experience. Since arriving in this land, the three of us have worked together to rebuild Ashby, single handedly repel the undead from the nearby crypts, and bring the peasants of Garmol back to a place they can call home.”
Shae Vanderin: “We are in good standing with Colonel Semara, and have received her blessing both in rearming the local populace and forming this outfit.”
Shae Vanderin: “So to answer your question.”
Shae Vanderin: “Yes this is all of us, but we know is better to build from the ground up than take on too much at once.”
Shae Vanderin: “We plan on accepting no more than 30 new recruits to start.”
Merc: “There are seventeen of us. What are we going to do, guard a chicken coop?”
Raegar: “Gilded Royal Chicken Coop.”
Raegar: “Home to the Emperor of Chickendom.”
Merc: “Does he pay?”
Shae Vanderin: “Guard duty is for guards. If that is your lot, I would suggest you apply with the city watch.”
Shae Vanderin: “There are an additional 4 men from Rurik who have been with us faithfully since we arrived here as well, so our numbers in actuality are now above twenty.”
William: “Actually miss, they’re at the lumber camp, helping to get that set up.”
Shae Vanderin: “In regards to pay, our plan is to run this company commission based. Therefore as contracts come in, they will be assigned to teams in the company. The amount of pay depends on how much we were able to negotiate for the job.”
Shae Vanderin: “As we move, we may gain new recruits as well as lose others. But the format will remain the same and never change. In that I give you my word.”
Merc: “So… do we have a job?”
Shae Vanderin: “We may have something. But I will not discuss that now until you are accepted. It is not prudent to speak of jobs with non-members.”
Merc: “Its not prudent to join an operation with no prospects, either.”
Merc: “Aye, and so far you’ve given us nothing.”
Raegar: “You two are smart, officer material.”
Shae Vanderin: “I will promise you work if you are accepted. But you must understand that nothing is being asked of you when you join save proving your worth. There is no investment on your part save for group training which is more academic than martial. I only suggest you take this into account as well.”
Merc: “You ask us to take everything on faith. Faith does not pay wages or fill empty bellies.”
Ilphvrae: “Think of it like this lads, it is hard to get a contract when you don’t have men. It will be easier for Shae to get work if she has troops ready to go.”
Ilphvrae: “So you have current work now or are you not working? Would you rather not have a job that will pay once a contract is procured or continue on with no work? I am sure that food can be found to feed you.” /em looks to Shay
Shae Vanderin: “I promise work for all who are accepted for 1 month. The compensation will be 2 silvers per day.”
Nick (Shae Vanderin): check that
Nick (Shae Vanderin): whats 2 silver x 20 men x 30 days in gold
You have 14 men.
Nick (Shae Vanderin): yes im padding for safety.
Raegar: 28 silver a day
40 silver a day, at 20 men.
Raegar: 28×30, 840 silver.
or 84, for the 14 you actually have.
Raegar: I actually got that
Raegar: good going brain math parts..
Shae Vanderin: Can I get a knowledge check given my background to know if that is a fair price for soldiers?
not really needed, its standard wage for a level 1 warrior.
Doug (Ilphvrae): I will put in 10 gold of my own to help cover the first month
Nick (Shae Vanderin): I can barely cover the first month
Nick (Shae Vanderin): and that will leave me with silvers to eat myself
Doug (Ilphvrae): well you both have a shit more gold then I do :P
Nick (Shae Vanderin): well its all we have so we cant promise more.
Ilphvrae: I have the 30 that I was paid the last time and thats it. I have not been paid but that one time.
Merc: “So. Two silver a day, one month initial contract.”
Doug (Ilphvrae): I have the 30 that I was paid the last time and thats it. I have not been paid but that one time.
Shae Vanderin: So yes I say 2 silvers as I said above.
Raegar: the company has 12 gold.
Raegar: I say again
Doug (Ilphvrae): We got paid from the temple job that time too, yes? how much was that?
Raegar: we split that out at the bar
Doug (Ilphvrae): from the priest that got spitted on the statue
Doug (Ilphvrae): yeah how much was that?
Doug (Ilphvrae): this last time was 30 gold
Raegar: …Friggen like, 30g.
it was fuck-all.
Raegar: You are talking about when we were in Rurik?
not even, iirc
Raegar: first time?
Doug (Ilphvrae): yeah
Doug (Ilphvrae): the payment you gave gack
Raegar: Already split out
Raegar: IT WAS 25G TOTAL
Raegar: we split 25g
Doug (Ilphvrae): OK
Raegar: We got money from the commander
short form, you’re all broke.
Raegar: this time around for the bandit job
Shae Vanderin: “Yes 2 silvers. Unfortunately besides water, and the generosity you are able to gain from the people of Ashby, food will be provided by you. We will try to put together a meal and ale as welcome if you agree to join.”
Raegar: we also split that
Raegar: That came to… I dont remember
Raegar: I know I already added it to my gold in any case.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Yup. That must be the 2 gold I have in addition to the 30
The fourteen of them huddle and start talking.
Doug (Ilphvrae): since you can cover it Nick, I will hold onto my 10 gold to buy supplies :P
Ilphvrae looks for Bill
Shae Vanderin: Do you want a diplomacy roll for me to have swayed them a bit?
After a short conversation, the two spokesmen come back, “We’ll give you one month.”
Not really, no.
Shae Vanderin: j
Shae Vanderin: k
Raegar: “Anyone accepted into the company for the first month contract will be given a sign-up bonus of one gold coin if they volunteer for duty here in Ashby when we are not out in the field. You will be expected to help train the guards in Ashby.”
Raegar: how many silvers for a gold coin?
Shae Vanderin: 10
Raegar: make that two gold coins.
Doug (Ilphvrae): 10 silver per 1 gold
Raegar: sign up bonus
Raegar: i keep wanting to break those down into hundreds..
Raegar: silly brain..
Doug (Ilphvrae): WoWs fault!
Raegar: “Any takers?”
Ilphvrae keeps looking for bill
Merc: “We already agreed to give you one month. Where do you want us to pitch camp?”
Bill is standing right nearby.
Raegar: for the record, I was asking if any of these guys wanted to make extra money.
Raegar: While we find a job.
Ilphvrae: “Bill my friend! Hello, hello!”
Ilphvrae: “Do we happen to have any wagons that can haul goods?”
William: “Uh… I believe Brother Hansen had a wagon?”
Doug (Ilphvrae): the brother is still here, yeah?
At the shrine to Horus set up in one of the huts.
Ilphvrae: “Thank you Bill, thank you. em/ pats him on the arm
”color:#540000;“>Ilphvrae head off to the shrine to find the Brother Hansen
”color:#005500;“>Doug (Ilphvrae): Bast a jealous goddess?
”color:#005500;“>Doug (Ilphvrae): OK
”color:#000054;“>The fourteen men continue standing there, waiting.
”color:#540000;“>Ilphvrae continues to the shrine looking for the brother
”color:#005500;“>Doug (Ilphvrae): prolly need to be paid and told where to camp :P
”color:#000054;">Raegar: “Set up your tents near the huts. You will build a home in Ashby when we arent out in the field.”
Raegar: “You are welcome to the amenities of the town.”
They nod and move off as a group to start pitching camp.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Shrine is inthe town, yeah?
Shae Vanderin: Spend the rest of the day meeting with the men and scribing their name and skill set on a list, also get a 1 or 2 sentence history of their experience/criminal records.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Just making sure :P
Shae, none of them prove willing to meet you individually.
Shae Vanderin: Is that normal?
They will agree to answer your questions in their camp, but they will not submit to individual interrogation.
Shae Vanderin: Oh
Shae Vanderin: Doesnt matter where its done.
Shae Vanderin: Ill ask them in their camp.
Shae Vanderin: Just doing it for record keeping.
All of them are professional sellswords, and each one of them is a former member of the retinue of either one of Garmol’s merchant or noble houses.
None admit to any criminal record.
Shae Vanderin: All are martial skilled, no wizard types?
Shae Vanderin: All human?
Raegar heads to his hut.
Shae Vanderin: kk
Is anyone else doing anything for the rest of the day?
Shae Vanderin: nope
GM: [1d20+7 = 8]
THE NEXT MORNING, THE SUN RISES
Shae Vanderin: “Im going to head into Garmol, any of you have an business there want to accompany me?”
Ilph left last evening, apparently.
Shae Vanderin: “Going to change the recruitment posters and put up some advertising posters instead.”
Shae, when you exit your domicile, you see something approaching Ashby from the direction of Garmol.
It looks like a wagon and a few riders.
Shae Vanderin: Put on my armor and then head out to watch them approach.
Six horsemen, a wagon, and four more men in the wagon; all heavily armed, turn off to enter Ashby.
They appear to be soldiers.
Shae Vanderin: Are they wearing any .. right
Shae Vanderin: Let them approach and then greet them. “Hail there, what bring soldiers to the humble town of Ashby?”
Ilphvrae come out to greet the newcommers
I thought you went to town.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Yes sorry :P
Soldier: “Official business – we’re to meet with Raegar?”
Shae Vanderin: “Of course, let me get him. Feel free to stable your horses at the stable.”
Shae Vanderin: Find Raegar.
Raegar trudges down to the entrance to town.
They are, by now, in the middle of town.
Raegar: “Wagon hmm?”
Raegar: “Colonel Semara sent you?”
Soldier: “Aye, that’s so.”
Raegar: “The contents are mine, yes?”
There’s a chest in the back of the wagon.
Soldier: “Ashby and her peoples’ share, entrusted to you for keeping.”
Raegar: “mm hmm.. Yes.”
Soldier: “I assume you’ll want this somewhere secure, if you’ll tell us where to bring it?”
Raegar: “Yes, over here.”
Raegar shows them to his hut.
The four in the wagon hoist the chest out and carry it into the indicated hut. The one doing the talking withdraws a key from a pouch and hands it over to Raegar.
Raegar: “Thank you.”
Raegar: “Please, rest your horses a bit, are you headed back to Garmol?”
Soldier: “I’m also to inform you that, in light of the recent trouble at Rurik, a small detachment will be operating out of Ashby – only half a dozen or so horsemen, to patrol the area.”
Raegar: “Ahhh. Most excellent.”
Soldier: “And yes, I’m afraid we have to get back; appreciate the offer though.”
Barring objection, they withdraw.
You are left with a chest. And a key.
Shae Vanderin: “What was that all about?”
Raegar: “Daltigoth can be generous with its friends as it can be harsh with its enemies.”
Raegar opens the chest with the key.
The chest is filled with gold coins.
Shae Vanderin: “Blood on each and every one of those coins. Ill leave you to it, Im headed to Garmol.”
Shae Vanderin heads to grab the horse shes been using and leaves.
Shae departs for Garmol!
…given no other pressing activity, SHAE ARRIVES IN GARMOL
Shae Vanderin: Very simply, changing recruitment announcment in Garmol to be those who are students of wizardry or woodland scouts. Putting up advertising for mercenary/investigation jobs that are outside the city limits. And then headed to the drunken Meryak to get a badh and well drunk.“
”color:#000054;“>Shae Vanderin: -”
Still telling applicants and interested parties to head to Ashby?
Shae Vanderin: yes, only going to take 4 more recruits if they come tho.
Shae Vanderin: 20 is the max we can handle atm.
Raegar: friggen ask Raegar.
I don’t think she wants your money.
Shae Vanderin: Not just the money though.
Shae Vanderin: We need jobs to support what we have.
Shae Vanderin: Ill try to find a merc guild in Garmol or a fighters guild or somesuch.
There remains no such enterprise.
Shae Vanderin: Well np I just formed one :)
Shae Vanderin: So bodyguards, armed escorts, ect. Any thing that pays.
Shae Vanderin: Advertising it all.
Shae Vanderin: Then taking a good meal spending the night and heading back to Ashby in the morning at dawn.
Shae Vanderin: And getting armor cleaned :P.
Shae arrives at Ashby about the same time Ilphvrae does.
Shae Vanderin: And converting all my gold to silver.
Difference: Ilph arrives with a wagon.
All of the above can be handled, Shae.
You have silver.
Ilph rolls into town with a wagon!
Shae rides into town with a horse.
Shae Vanderin: “Must have missed you in Garmol Ilph. Did you find what you needed?”
Ilphvrae: “I think so yes. If I missed anything I will get it next time.”
Shae Vanderin: “What did you aquire anyway?”
Ilphvrae: “Some food for the boys to buy, camp food. Beans, bacon, bread stuff like that. Some basic furniture items, and other sundries folks need that I am sure they could not bring with them when they fled.”
Ilphvrae: “We will see how well it goes.”
Shae Vanderin: “Good stuff, all useful.”
Ilphvrae: “I was working with very limited funds.”
Raegar: “Heres some money.”
Ilphvrae: “Thats not a phrase you hear every day.”
Raegar: “..Err… How much ya need?”
Ilphvrae: “I am not sure yet to be honest.”
Ilphvrae: “I need to know what your people here need after this lot of stuff sells.”
Raegar: “My people? Ashby?”
answer: just about everything.
Ilphvrae: “Should I focus on foods, or houseing items or tools or what. I need to do some research”
Shae Vanderin: “Its not a bad idea Raegar, most small towns have a general store where travelers can stop and replenish their supplies. Plus the people of Ashby can shop as well.”
Ilphvrae: “Yes, your people. Theyneed a sense of normal and buying things they need will gie them that.”
Ilphvrae: “A man or a woman can’t regain their self worth if eveyrthing is just continued to be given to them.”
Ilphvrae: “I figure they need a bit of everything, but I wont know how much I need until I sell this. as of right now I have 2 gold, well 1 gold after I donate a gold to the shrine for the use of the wagon.”
Raegar: “So… You want me to build a store.”
Ilphvrae: “I will need to buy another wagon or two as I dont want to keep using the shrines wagon.”
Nick (Shae Vanderin): afk food
Raegar: “As of now… We are working on building a well… A Forge…”
Ilphvrae: “A store is something that can be built later on, I can sell from my hut. If you want other merchats though you need an area they can build at or have a building or two they can buy.”
A passing peasant says, “I think what you really need is someone you can delegate the job to! You don’t want to do this on your own!”
Raegar: “…Why would I want merchants?”
Ilphvrae: “That is a very smart idea my friend.” /nods to the commoner
Raegar: “You dont pay for merchants to come to your city…”
Raegar: “Merchants pay you to come to your city..”
Ilphvrae: “Yes in taxes. but you need to have a place they can build at.”
Raegar: “You mean a market, yes?”
Ilphvrae: “If not all you will get is a small waggon like this every now and again. Gamol will make money but your town and people wont.”
Raegar: you know medieval merchants didnt just show up with wares, yes?
Raegar: you have to have something to sell locally..
Raegar: we dont atm.
And if they did happen to be passing through…
they’d just set up their wagons in the town square or outside it
sell whatever they could, and move on
Raegar: and the peasents here are being KEPT ALIVE by Raegar
Raegar: they dont HAVE money
Raegar: other than what they brought
yeah.. you really have nothing to offer merchants..
Doug (Ilphvrae): Yep I know. YOU have lumber to sell or will. But a new town is a ideal place for a just out of apprenticeship crafter of some sort to set up shop with folks that NEED stuff
Raegar: no we dont…
Kiergath: no, its not
Kiergath: that crafter has no reason to set up shop somewhere nobody has money to pay him with
Kiergath: until the first harvest comes in, Ashby has nothing
Raegar: We arent over-producing lumber.. We arent producing enough.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Wellyou as the DM know what coin the people have or dont have :P I figure they had some coin /shrug
Raegar: just so you know, Ashby atm has been nothing but a money sink. It wont make any money until the first planting
Raegar: which is months away
short form, Ilph.. is that even your minor merchandising isn’t sustainable at the moment.
In a few trips, the proverbial well will dry up.
Doug (Ilphvrae): I di dnot figure it was but I am tired of being broke :P
Doug (Ilphvrae): so a little coin is better then none :P
Until that first harvest and the lumber mill starts producing, Ashby is just draining Raegar’s pockets. Its got no economy.
Nick (Shae Vanderin): hah me too
Nick (Shae Vanderin): Shae is tired of is I should clarify
Doug (Ilphvrae): and I figured this was easier then robbing some folks in Gamol :P
Raegar: you would have figured wrong
Doug (Ilphvrae): and that it fell in line with my character as I have talked about with Morgan.
Raegar: thats why i stopped being Raegar
Raegar: its perfectly in keeping with your character
Raegar: but I thought, maybe, you didnt have the whole picture of Ashby
Kiergath: like Dave says.. robbing folks in Garmol would’ve been a more practical way to make money. There’s nothing here.
Raegar: Its a few hovels and a dirt wall
And a bunch of tents!
Doug (Ilphvrae): No I kinda do, I just see it in a different light and a little more looking ahead I guess :)
Raegar: Dont get me wrong
Raegar: raegar is building a lot of stuff in Ashby
Raegar: but theres nothing here yet
ah, there’s the problem. Raegar sees Ashby how it is now, Ilph sees it at a different stage in the time-space continuum!
Doug (Ilphvrae): I have learned to assume the best not the worst so I was assume that they had some coin to spend :P
Nick (Shae Vanderin): Ilph sees its potential value
if you people keep this up, some uppity prat in a funny hat and robes is going to appear in the middle of Ashby on a floating chair
And then he’s going to start tampering with time and space.
Doug (Ilphvrae): LOL
Raegar: fine by me..
Raegar: more town less waiting..
Doug (Ilphvrae): :)
Q: okay then!
Raegar: oh crap no
Raegar: not a q
Raegar: thats what he meant..
Shae Vanderin: “Well at any rate, we can use what you brought for a great meal to welcome in our new recruits.”
Doug (Ilphvrae): You asked how much coin I needed I was just being honest :) which is aginst MY (Doug) nature when I play a rogue :P
Merc: “So, you didn’t want more than thirty you said?”
Doug (Ilphvrae): Which is also out of character for Doug sh eis not a greedy bitch either, lol :P
Shae Vanderin: “If even that many. I want to secure more work for us before we expand too far.”
Doug (Ilphvrae): There is more food then just for a great meal, Nick. Were talking bags of flour and beans and stuff like that.
Doug (Ilphvrae): Stuff that will last a good while
Merc: [3d12 = 18]
Doug (Ilphvrae): that was the idea with the “camp” style food :)
Shae Vanderin: “I feel as if we could use some specialists in our ranks however. Some skilled in magic, or wilderness survival or tracking. Maybe even some animal handlers with a hound pack.”
Merc: “Well ma’am, we ask because we have another eighteen back in town waiting for our say-so.”
Merc: “Alot of trained soldiers out of work at the moment, you see.”
Ilphvrae: “32 men would give us a good stating force Shae”
Shae Vanderin nods.
Raegar: time fer bed
Raegar: I got work tomorrow
Doug (Ilphvrae): Speaking of
Shae Vanderin: “Fine. But thats all for now.”
Nick (Shae Vanderin): Night all.
